Formula and method

The Institute of Medicine's 2009 guideline ranges. The target to date is the first-trimester allowance plus the weekly rate for the weeks after week 13.

Formula used

IOM 2009 gestational weight gain ranges by pre-pregnancy BMI

Assumptions and limits

  • For an underweight twin pregnancy the IOM gives no recommendation, and the tool reports exactly that.
  • Weight gain in pregnancy should be monitored by your care team; this tool does not replace that.
